MPA Monitoring Enterprise
California's Marine Protected Areas
The California Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA) requires the State to design and manage an improved network of marine protected areas (MPAs) to protect marine ecosystems, including marine life and their habitats. The MLPA also requires monitoring to ensure that the MPA network meets the goals of the Act, facilitates adaptive management, and improves understanding of marine systems.
Our Role
The MPA Monitoring Enterprise was launched in 2007 as a program of the OST to lead the development and implementation of impartial, scientifically rigorous and cost-effective MPA monitoring. Working at the boundary between science and management, we provide a unique combination of science and policy expertise to develop and test a realistic way to take the pulse of ocean ecosystems and evaluate the performance of the emerging statewide network of MPAs.
